The History of Copenhagen

The history of Copenhagen is the history of Denmark, just as Denmark's history is that of Copenhagen. Ever since Bishop Absalon built his "Castle at Havn" in 1167, the city has been a lynch-pin in the country's history - not always as the country's capital, but always as one of the most important localities in the Kingdom. The history of the city can be read clearly in ints face; it is still charcterized by Christian IV's many magnificent Renaissance buildings.

Despite having evolved into a major capital, Copenhagen is still a small city. The medieval town and the new bridge disticts, make up a harmonious whole. And not only is the water essentiel to the city's prosperity, it also frame the city.

The long history has shaped the metropolis and created a milieu for the city an its citizens for more than 800 years.
